La Grave la Meije is a very different ski area. There is only one cable car up to the summit at 3200 metres from where skiers descend off-piste in the steep powder snow valleys of the Meije or the more gentle Chancel valleys. The area is for skiers who are looking for wide open spaces. It is the kingdom of freeride skiing. The two villages of the Meije area, La Grave and Villar d'Arene, are very picturesque. The houses are built of stone with traditional thick slate roofs. The atmosphere is truly that of the high mountains, far from modernity.
